Gardeners Barking Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Barking is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors, contractors, members of the public and anyone else who may be affected by our work. We recognise our duty to meet applicable health and safety legislation and to follow industry best practice in all gardening activities.
This policy applies to all staff, whether permanent, temporary or self-employed, and to all work carried out at client premises, domestic gardens, commercial sites and communal outdoor spaces.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
The primary objectives of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm resulting from our activities. We aim to identify hazards, assess risks and implement effective controls before work begins and throughout the duration of each project.
We will continually review our working methods, tools and equipment to ensure they remain safe, suitable and properly maintained for gardening and grounds maintenance work.
Management Responsibilities
Management at Gardeners Barking is responsible for implementing and maintaining this policy. This includes planning work so that it can be carried out safely, providing appropriate resources for health and safety, and ensuring that staff have the information, instruction, training and supervision they require.
Managers will ensure that risk assessments are completed for relevant tasks, that control measures are applied, and that work is monitored to confirm that safe systems are followed. Where incidents or near misses occur, management will investigate the causes, record findings and take action to prevent recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. Staff must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear required personal protective equipment and report any unsafe conditions or practices without delay.
Employees are expected to cooperate fully with health and safety measures, attend required training, and refrain from misusing or interfering with anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Gardeners Barking carries out risk assessments for gardening and maintenance activities, including but not limited to lawn care, hedge cutting, tree work within our competence, planting, garden clearance, waste handling, and the use of powered tools and machinery.
Before work begins, staff will consider site-specific hazards such as uneven ground, vehicles, overhead services, underground services, water features, public access and weather conditions. Control measures may include exclusion zones, barriers, safe access routes, appropriate tools, and adjusted working methods.
Safe systems of work will be developed and communicated for tasks that present significant risk, and these systems must be followed at all times.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
All gardening equipment, including powered tools, mowers, trimmers and other machinery, will be selected, maintained and inspected to ensure it is safe and fit for purpose. Defective equipment must not be used and should be reported immediately to management.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate powered machinery. Manufacturer instructions and safety information must always be followed, and guards or safety devices must not be removed or bypassed.
Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment, such as safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high visibility clothing and respiratory protection, will be provided where identified by risk assessment. Employees must wear the required equipment when instructed and take reasonable care of it.
Damaged or defective protective equipment must be reported so that it can be repaired or replaced. Personal protective equipment is considered a last line of defence and does not replace the need for safer working methods and engineering controls.
Chemicals, Fertilisers and Hazardous Substances
Where herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers or other substances are used, Gardeners Barking will assess the associated risks and adopt safer alternatives where reasonably practicable. Only trained staff may handle such products, and they must follow product labels and safety data guidance.
Storage, mixing, application and disposal will be carried out in a controlled manner to protect people, property, wildlife and the wider environment. Appropriate protective equipment and spill control methods will be used as required.
Manual Handling and Physical Wellbeing
Gardening work often involves lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling and repetitive movements. We will minimise the risks associated with manual handling by planning work sensibly, using mechanical aids where possible, and breaking down loads into manageable sizes.
Employees will receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and are expected to avoid attempting tasks that exceed their capabilities. Staff should report any injuries, strains or concerns about their physical wellbeing at the earliest opportunity.
Working With Clients and the Public
Many of our projects take place in areas where clients, residents, visitors and members of the public may be present. Gardeners Barking will take all reasonable steps to keep others safe, including setting up clear work areas, using warning signs where appropriate and avoiding unnecessary obstructions.
We will communicate with clients regarding planned work, potential disruptions and any precautions they may need to observe while work is in progress.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses, injuries and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. Records will be kept and used to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Staff will be made aware of emergency arrangements, including what to do in the event of an injury, fire, equipment failure, chemical spill or other unexpected incident on site. First aid provision and access to emergency assistance will be organised in line with the nature and scale of our work.
Training, Communication and Review
Gardeners Barking is committed to providing appropriate health and safety training, instruction and information to all staff. This may include induction training, task-specific instruction, refreshers and updates when new methods or equipment are introduced.
This Health and Safety Policy will be communicated to all employees and made available to clients on request. The policy and associated procedures will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, company operations or identified risks.
Through cooperation, consultation and continuous improvement, Gardeners Barking aims to maintain a safe and healthy working environment and deliver gardening services in a responsible and professional manner.
